PSA's New Poster Contest
Oakwood High School Dome - November 2011
by Maggie Eviston
This past October the Breast Cancer Awareness Contest added a poster portion to the competition. For the last four years, Oakwood High School has been involved in the video portion of the contest as part of Debbie Smith's film classes.
"I really love the fact that students' work is going out to the world to help provide information for a good cause." Smith said.
Krista Furst's Graphic Art students created the posters.
According to the chair of The Breast Cancer Task Force Leigh Ann Fulford, the posters were added to the competition to encourage people to watch students' videos on YouTube.
The creator of the best-judged video will win $2,000, and more than $10,000 will be awarded in prizes and scholarships to more than 15 students.
Whichever video gets the most YouTube hits receives a $500 cash prize. Second place wins $400 and so on until fifth place receives $100.
Fulford hopes that by encouraging people to watch the videos, they'll be inspired to become active in the fight against breast cancer and realize their own risk.
This year's theme is "risk factors," such as age, sex, and habits.
Oakwod High School students along with students from eight other local schools created the videos that will be judged by an independent panel of The Breast Cancer Foundation and The Breast Cancer Task Force.
The contest is funded by monies raised at CARE Walk, which is held in Oakwood in the spring of each year with the help of Oakwood Giving and other student organizations.
You can check out the videos in YouTube by going to the Breast Cancer Task Force website at www.breastcancertf.org.
